Age of Opportunity by Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D. (4 stars)

About Age of Opportunity

Hardcover: 272 pages
Publisher: Eamon Dolan/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (September 9, 2014)

Adolescence now lasts longer than ever before. And as world-renowned expert on adolescent psychology Dr. Laurence Steinberg argues, this makes these years the key period in determining individuals’ life outcomes, demanding that we change the way we parent, educate, and understand young people.

In Age of Opportunity, Steinberg leads readers through a host of new findings — including groundbreaking original research — that reveal what the new timetable of adolescence means for parenting 13-year-olds (who may look more mature than they really are) versus 20-somethings (who may not be floundering even when it looks like they are). He also explains how the plasticity of the adolescent brain, rivaling that of years 0 through 3, suggests new strategies for instilling self-control during the teenage years. Packed with useful knowledge, Age of Opportunity is a sweeping book in the tradition of Reviving Ophelia, and an essential guide for parents and educators of teenagers.

Praise for Age of Opportunity

“As a mother of two boys and an educator, I am so grateful Laurence Steinberg has written this amazing book. He not only clearly and elegantly communicates the newest insights into understanding teenagers’ brains but also shows how adults can manage ourselves when we get frustrated with teens’ behavior.” — Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabes and Masterminds and Wingmen

“Steinberg explains how ‘abnormal’ adolescent behavior is actually ‘normal.’ This book belongs on the shelf of every parent, teacher, youth worker, counselor, judge — heck, anyone interested in pre-teens and teenagers.” — David Walsh, Ph.D., author of Why Do They Act That Way?

“If you need to understand adolescents — whether your own or anyone else’s — you must read this book. Steinberg explains why most of our presumptions about adolescence are dead wrong and reveals the truth about this exciting and unnerving stage of life. Written with warmth, lucidity, and passion, Age of Opportunity will fill parents with relief by demystifying their children. Educators and policy-makers should study it carefully.” — Jennifer Senior, author of All Joy and No Fun

Review

As the mom of three girls ages 14, 12, and 9, I am just beginning to see the ebbs and flows of the adolescent years. I am also the oldest of three girls, so I remember those years as well. Just in one generation, I am shocked by the new averages being thrown at me about when girls entered puberty. One pediatrician told me the average was getting closer to 9 than 10.

Age of Opportunity supports the idea that the adolescent phase of life is getting longer. The author states, "The brain is radically transformed by stress hormones like testosterone and estrogen." This is certainly not new information, but when coupled with data supporting an elongated adolescence, it's significant.  I also found it interesting that while parents try to delay adolescence, society seems bent on a delayed adulthood.

Further studies show, and are illustrated in this book, that our brain is heightened during these years and captures the corresponding memories with vivid detail. In addition to all the brain studies, the book provides worrisome data comparing our teens to those in other industrialized countries.

At this point, I was convinced and craving solutions. After all, my kids are there and depending on me. I loved his basic principles: Be Warm, Be Firm, Be Supportive. It's the gray area that gets confusing. When is warm too warm (we create kids who go on American Idol and can't handle any critique and think they can sing even when faced with the reality that they can't) and firm too firm (although he does address that the punishment shouldn't be extreme and to be consistent and fair)?

As a parent, we know what we should do in a perfect, calm environment. Unfortunately, too often the chaos and expectations of our time take center stage: pressure to perform in sports and academics, an overload of technology, and constantly changing education focuses (hello, Common Core).

Overall, two-thirds of the book convinced me about a problem I suspected, while only one-third focused on possible solutions. I would have rather seen that flip-flopped.

If you are looking for a kick in the pants to search out parenting solutions to benefit your children, this is a great starting point. It's a book I'd love to see followed up by a manual with more specific solutions and examples for parents craving to make that difference.

Review

Who doesn't need a reset in their life, especially where their diet is concerned? The 3-Day Reset offers practical, and easy to navigate, choices. Pooja Mottl identifies several food groups--focusing on a top three of sugar, salt, and wheat--to eliminate for three days. During this time, the body (and mind) is able to change what it craves.

Three days. Not bad, right. But, the food groups targeted are tough ones. Not that a diet worth anything would be easy. Since I'm already gluten-free, and thus don't have wheat in my diet, I tried the sugar reset. I won't lie. It was hard, but sugar is my biggest nemesis. For me, three days wasn't quite enough. I think I'd have to go at least a week to make real change. Plus, I wanted many more recipe options, although I really liked the one for Lemon-Lime soda.

Beside the resets, Pooja Mottl emphasizes the need for WAMP (Whole And Minimally Process foods) in our diet. Think organic (Super WAMP). Basically, processed food is bad for us. Not shocking, but a great reminder.

Overall, I found this an informative book. It definitely inspired me to make some changes in my diet. I just hope there's a recipe companion book coming out soon!

Sugar Reset

Sweet stuff rocks. To many of us, sugary foods are as good as it gets—more tempting than sour, more satisfying than spicy, more comforting than salty. This makes sense since we’re programmed to like sweet things from the moment we’re born—one of the reasons why we enjoy our mother’s sweet breast milk as babies.

The problem is, the majority of sweetness we’re now eating doesn’t suit our biology.

Instead of satisfying our sweet tooth with things like ripe summer berries, dried figs, grapes, and raw honey (all WAMP foods), we’re drowning ourselves with processed table sugar and corn syrup.

And it’s everywhere. Processed sugar has managed to tiptoe its way into almost all kinds of foods without our noticing. It is a main ingredient in peanut butters, salad dressings, marinades, barbecue sauces, sports drinks, frozen pizza, and crackers. Even savory foods, like breads, pasta sauce, and chicken broth, are laden with processed sugars.

Sadly, it’s fair to say that sugar is the lifeblood of the food industry.

Sugar goes down like water, and we’re consuming it with reckless abandon. According to the USDA, the average American eats about twenty-two teaspoons of sugar, or about 13 percent of our total calories, each and every day. Okay, let’s think about this for a second: That’s like opening up your kitchen silverware drawer, grabbing a teaspoon, jamming it into your sugar bowl, and sticking it straight inside your mouth twenty-two times a day.

It doesn’t help that sugar is notoriously difficult to detect in foods. Not only is there no distinct line item for “added sugars” on the nutrition-facts panel of your food’s label, but sugar also masquerades under a long and complicated list of aliases that would make even Jason Bourne weep with jealousy. “Dextrose,” “fructose,” “cane juice,” and “maltose” all mean that sugar has been added to your food. Same with “invert sugar,” “corn-syrup solids,” and “lactose.”

Apart from the obvious health consequences that arise from consuming too much processed sugar—like diabetes, weight gain, obesity, and hypertension—eating sugar may very well be the single biggest impediment to falling in love with healthy food. As we learned in The Power of WAMP, processed sugar exploits our innate biological weaknesses, lulling us into addiction and desensitizing our taste buds to the point that we can no longer find deliciousness in the kind of food that wants to love us back. When we become accustomed to processed sugar, suddenly, sweet WAMP foods become nothing short of sacrifices. A bowl of oats with cinnamon and banana pales in comparison to a vanilla-glazed scone from Starbucks or a bowl of Froot Loops. Even the best loose-leaf tea no longer tastes good without an extra sugar packet or two.

But we can—right now—slam on the brakes and put this train in reverse. All we have to do is reset our relationship with sugar. We need to put an end to our sugar ignorance and off-kilter sweet palate and relearn sugar from the ground up. We also need the opportunity to experience what it’s like not to have processed sugar in our lives, and give our taste buds the chance to be awakened and excited by the superior flavor that comes from WAMP sweetness.

The Self-Help Stress Solutions - Nutrition for Stress Relief by Darlene Josaphe (4 stars) - Review & Kindle Fire HD Giveaway

About Nutrition for Stress Relief (49 Pages)

Often times, we start to eat better in response to a particular situation, such as feeling sick or fatigued. Yet these habits wear off and we're back to our normal eating patterns. You can't eat healthy some of the time and expect it to nourish your body for the long haul.

This book shows you how to follow a healthy eating regimen that will allow you to thrive in the everyday world. You will learn how to keep your expectations realistic, incorporate the healthy foods that you love and weed out the foods that are known for causing stress. It may be hard at first, but the end rewards will be worth your effort.

Review

It makes sense that what we put into our body affects our stress. After all, we are what we eat. For most of us, over-busy lives have led to poor eating habits. To improve our overall health, and to reduce stress, we need to focus on natural foods and avoiding foods that cause stress. Sadly, the worst foods for stress are the ones we usually crave like refined sugars.

In addition to poor food choices, we also have to be careful to avoid emotional eating. Recently, I gave up sugar. For the first few days, it was awful. I wanted sugar all the time. Then, I started taking notes on when I wanted it most. Sure enough, it was during stressful moments (kids fighting, deadlines approaching). I'm sure I'm not the only one with that experience.

Darlene Josaphe suggests we incorporate more healthy fats into our diets and details essential foods for combating stress. Nothing about this book is complicated--it's just a down-to-Earth approach to reducing stress by paying attention to what our bodies need.

Nutrition for Stress Relief is a quick read with valuable tips to eat better and reduce stress. Although it's only 49 pages, Darlene Josaphe makes sure each word impacts the reader.

The Self-Help Stress Solutions - Walking for Stress Relief by Darlene Josaphe (4 stars) Review & Kindle Fire HD Giveaway

About Walking for Stress Relief (49 pages)

Consider the common stressors of everyday life: work, family, money and community obligations to name a few. When you let these pressures add up, they lead to stress - in sometimes dangerous levels - which can result in stress-related illness. Walking moves the body in a relaxed way, helps clear the mind and allows the walker to focus on the physical sensations in the body.

Meditation exercises such as yoga and tai chi often get the spotlight for their ability to clear the mind, relax the body and offer a quality workout. But the simple act of walking rivals these exercises by relieving physical and mental stress and bringing the mind to a new sense of calm. This shows you how to start walking for stress relief.

Review

Everyone struggles with some degree of stress, and each of us utilize different coping mechanisms to lessen it. Even when we know what works, we are often too stressed to put a plan into action. Thanks to Darlene Josaphe's series, we have some quick-read resources at our disposal.

I was given the opportunity to review a few of them: Walking for Stress Relief, Nutrition for Stress Relief, and Time Management for Stress Relief. The first up-- walking. I agree with the author that walking for exercise and stress relief isn't hip and sexy. We all hear about yoga, Zumba, and local races. Exercise is a very effective tool for stress reduction, and walking is one of the easiest ways to do that--it's inexpensive (no gym fees), connects you with nature, and it's simple (no difficult moves).

Walking not only fulfills the daily recommended exercise component of our lives, it gives us time to clear our heads, lower blood pressure, and allows us to sleep better. All of which then reduce our stress. Through a series of small chapters, the author shares the science behind walking as well as the corresponding benefits.

If you suffer from stress, take a few minutes to read this quick, but effective, piece and consider adding walking to your life. The author has a non-threatening way of communicating what we all know, but need to be reminded of: stress is not good for us, and there are simple ways to reduce it if we focus and take the necessary time.
