They Were Like Family to Me by Helen Maryles Shankman Blitz

They Were Like Family to Me: Stories

Critically praised, beloved by readers, In the Land of Armadillos has an evocative new cover and title, They Were Like Family to Me. Now in Paperback! Available October 4.

1942. With the Nazi Party at the height of its power, the occupying army empties Poland's towns and cities of their Jewish citizens. As neighbor turns on neighbor and survival often demands unthinkable choices, Poland has become a moral quagmire—a place of shifting truths and blinding ambiguities.

Blending folklore and fact, Helen Maryles Shankman shows us the people of Wlodawa, a remote Polish town. We meet a cold-blooded SS officer dedicated to rescuing the Jewish creator of his son's favorite picture book; a Messiah who appears in a little boy's bedroom to announce that he is quitting; a young Jewish girl who is hidden by the town's most outspoken anti-Semite—and his talking dog. And walking among these tales are two unforgettable figures: silver-tongued Willy Reinhart, commandant of the forced labor camp who has grand schemes to protect "his" Jews, and Soroka, the Jewish saddlemaker, struggling to survive.

Channeling the mythic magic of classic storytellers like Sholem Aleichem and Isaac Bashevis Singer and the psychological acuity of modern-day masters like Nicole Krauss and Nathan Englander, They Were Like Family to Me is a testament to the persistence of humanity in the most inhuman conditions.

“One of the most original and consistently captivating short story collections to have appeared in recent years…(They Were Like Family to Me) is a singularly inventive collection of chilling stark realism enhanced by the hallucinatory ingredient of top-drawer magical realism, interrogating the value of art, storytelling, and dreams in a time of peril and presenting hard truths with wisdom, magic, and grace.” —Jewish Book Council

“Moving and unsettling…Like Joyce's Dubliners, this book circles the same streets and encounters the same people as it depicts the horrors of Germany's invasion of Poland through the microcosm of one village…Shankman's prose is inventive and taut… A deeply humane demonstration of wringing art from catastrophe.” —Kirkus Reviews

“...by turns forthright and tender, oblique and intimate, brutal and ethereal…Though each story stands beautifully on its own, it is the completed tapestry of interwoven details that finally reveals the entire picture and provides the full emotional depth of the collected stories…The author’s greatest accomplishment is in leaving the horror to speak for itself, and instead giving voice to the enchantment.” —Historical Novel Society

ABOUT THE BOOK

Unrest brews among gods and mortals alike when Hades makes a deal with the Fates to end his loneliness in the Underworld. But when Persephone proposes to conspire with him in a plot against Demeter, things get out of hand. Soon, the war among the gods is as critical as the one playing out among the Achaeans and Trojans on Earth.

Find out the truth of how Hades and Persephone met and fell in love and the impact it had on the rest of the pantheon during these tumultuous times. Learn how their children--Hypnos, Thanatos, Megaera, Tisiphone, Alecto, and Melinoe--came into being. Discover why they were assigned their respective duties as Sleep, Death, the Furies, and the goddess of ghosts. Find out the real reason why the Olympians possessed such profound disdain for these Underworld gods.

This prequel to The Gatekeeper's Saga is more than a retelling of the Persephone myth. Many more of the ancient myths are woven together to reveal the conflict, tension, and relationships among the gods in one of the most beloved pantheons in human history. The Gatekeeper's Bride can be read before or after The Gatekeeper's Saga, but readers might find more enjoyment from it after having met the characters by reading the saga first.

Author Amy Miles has always been a bit of a dreamer. Growing up as an only child, and a military brat to boot, she spent countless hours escaping into the pages of a book, only to spend the following days creating a new idea of how to twist up the story to make it unique.

Since becoming a mother, Amy has slowly nourished her love of the written word while snatching writing time in the midst of soiled diapers, tumbling over legos and peering around mounds of laundry and dishes that never seem to go away. Once her only son started school, Amy was free to let her fingers dive into dark mythology, tales of betrayal and love, and explore human nature in its rawest form. Her love of seeing the world from a different angle bloomed.

Amy is the author of several novels, including her popular young adult immortal books, The Arotas Series, which are an Amazon and iBooks bestselling series. Unwilling to be defined by any one genre, she proceeded to flip over to a science fiction/fantasy based idea with her Rising Trilogy. She then dove into contemporary romance with her novel, Captivate and explored the depths of her own faith with In Your Embrace.

Excerpt

“It is amiable that you care for the girl, but it is folly,” the King said, trying to steady his tone.
“Father,” Baylin tried to interrupt.
“Enough!” The King said in a final tone.
The room went completely silent. The tension was thick and heavy in the air. Luana looked down in her lap quietly, fearful to make eye contact with the King.
After a few quiet moments the King continued, “Now, I was thinking that since she is already going to be our guest here, you might consider Princess Isla. You’ve known one another since you were young and it would surely solidify faith with King Gideon that we mean to make right on our plan to assist in retaking Mirstone.”
“I do not want Isla!” Baylin shouted, knocking his chair back as he stood abruptly to his feet. “I will not yield on this father.”
The King sighed and rubbed his wrinkled forehead. His face changed to a mournful expression as he looked up at his son. “We all make sacrifices for the good of the Kingdom, Baylin. You must do your duty.”
“Ashmur,” the Queen began attempting to urge the King to reconsider. Baylin paced back and forth, bawling his fists.
Luana watched the scene unfold before her, as though she was not really even in the room. The three argued about her and this Princess Isla, as though they were pieces of property to be secured.
Isla. The name caused bile to rise up in the back of Luana’s throat. So this is who will take Baylin from me.
The large room felt suddenly very small to Luana. It was filled with sounds and smells that assaulted her senses. She could not take it anymore. Respect or not she had to leave the room.
She stood abruptly, tipping her chair back and losing her balance. She stretched her arms out, trying to catch herself. She reached for the edge of the table but missed and her hand knocked a tray of cheese onto the stone floor with a crash. She swayed backward, her feet going weak under her. Just before her body hit the floor, Baylin caught her in his arms. His mouth was open and he was saying something to her but she could not hear the words. Then there was nothing but darkness.
